In a significant development, as reported by the Rivers State Ministry of Health’s official Facebook page, the Rivers State government has commissioned a state-of-the-art Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) Medical Oxygen Plant at Bori Zonal Hospital, aimed at enhancing the state’s healthcare system.
The plant, a donation from the Global Fund and coordinated by the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), is expected to produce 60,000 litres of medical oxygen daily, ensuring uninterrupted oxygen supply to hospitals, reducing patient referrals, and lowering mortality rates.
The commissioning ceremony held yesterday, 11th December, was attended by representatives from the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, who praised Rivers State’s efforts to improve healthcare delivery. Mrs. Godwin Nina from the Oxygen Desk, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, noted, “This plant is one of 63 donated by the Global Fund through NACA to the Federal Ministry of Health, and distributed across tertiary and secondary health institutions in the country.” She added, “Rivers State is a beneficiary of two such plants, with the second one to be commissioned at Degema before the end of the week.

“The Honourable Commissioner for Health, Rivers State, expressed gratitude to the Global Fund, NACA, and the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, reaffirming the state’s commitment to ensuring the plant operates at full capacity and delivers maximum benefit to the people. The facility aligns with the state’s strategy to scale up medical oxygen availability across all levels of care, serving as a beacon of excellence in service delivery, accountability, and patient-centred care.
The development is expected to significantly improve healthcare outcomes in Rivers State and beyond, providing a reliable source of medical oxygen to hospitals and reducing the burden on patients and their families.
