Shettima Pushes Rail Revival to Position Nigeria as Africa’s Logistics Hub

Vice President Kashim Shettima declared on Monday that the revival and modernisation of Nigeria’s railway network are essential for the country to maintain its status as the leading logistics hub in Africa.

Speaking at the opening of the 2nd International Railway Conference in Abuja, Shettima emphasised that the Tinubu administration is committed to connecting Nigerian cities through integrated road and rail infrastructure to boost industrialisation.

Shettima highlighted that a modern rail system is crucial for easing the burden on Nigeria’s road network, which has suffered from decades of over-reliance, leading to congestion, deterioration, and higher accident rates.

He noted that railways offer a safer, more affordable, and environmentally friendly alternative, aligning with the government’s sustainable development goals.

Shettima also pointed to ongoing projects like the Lagos-Kano, Kano-Maradi, and Port Harcourt-Maiduguri railway lines, which are designed to be open to private sector participation.

However, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, echoed these sentiments, stating that the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda prioritises transformative infrastructure.

He mentioned the High-Speed Rail (HSR) project as a bold initiative with the potential to stimulate inclusive growth and national integration.

Minister of Transportation, Sa’idu Ahmed Alkali, added that the transportation sector is a key enabler of economic growth, with the government approving projects such as ultra-modern bus terminals across the six geopolitical zones to enhance public safety.

The event, organised by the Federal Ministry of Transportation in collaboration with De-Sadel Nigeria Limited and the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry, was attended by a wide range of government officials, industry leaders, and traditional rulers, including the Ooni of Ife and the Obi of Onitsha.
