Veteran highlife musician Bright Chimezie has voiced his concern over the lyrical depth of today’s music, urging younger artists to focus more on substance than just rhythm and commercial appeal.
Speaking on the CreativTea podcast, Chimezie acknowledged the impressive production quality and profitability of modern music but lamented the lack of enduring messages in many contemporary songs.
“Music is more profitable now than my time,” he said. “The only problem I have with the present crop of artists is their lyrical content. In terms of rhythms and every other thing, they are doing quite okay.”
Drawing from his own legacy, Chimezie referenced his 1984 hit “Respect Africa”, noting that even after four decades, he can still look back at his work with pride.
“Some of the things we sang stick,” he explained. “I can still watch what I did 40 years ago and be proud of my lyrics.”

He challenged today’s musicians to reflect on the long-term impact of their words, asking whether they would feel proud sharing their music with future generations.
“By the time your music stays up to 40 years, can you sit back with your children, see yourself and be proud of yourself?”
While commending the current generation for their creativity and success, Chimezie emphasised the importance of crafting songs that carry meaning and contribute positively to society.
His remarks have sparked conversations online, with many fans echoing his sentiments and calling for a return to music that not only entertains but also educates and uplifts.
