The Super Eagles are set to face off against the Bafana Bafana on Tuesday, September 8, promising an exciting match for both countries.
A recent report indicates that former Super Eagles goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi mentioned on Monday, September 8, that South Africa may inadvertently play into Nigeria’s strengths when the two teams meet on Tuesday.
As Nigeria prepares for the match against South Africa in Bloemfontein, they appear to have superior players on paper. However, this quality has not always translated into performance on the field.
Conversely, while South Africa may lack the individual talent of the Super Eagles, they have demonstrated their strength as a cohesive unit, making them a formidable opponent for Nigeria.
The Bafana Bafana will enjoy the support of their home crowd at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein, which will pose an additional challenge for Nigeria.
Given South Africa’s home advantage, they are likely to take the initiative against the Super Eagles, especially as they aim to secure their spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup swiftly.
However, according to former Super Eagles goalkeeper Akpeyi, who has spent a significant part of his career in South Africa with clubs like Chippa United, Kaizer Chiefs, and Mbabane Swallows, the tactics employed by the Bafana Bafana could backfire.

Akpeyi believes that the match between Nigeria and Rwanda will differ from the one against South Africa, as the Bafana Bafana are expected to be more aggressive, potentially leaving gaps in their defense.
“I’m not afraid; I’m not entirely convinced by how Bafana Bafana defeated Lesotho. Nevertheless, Nigeria’s performance against Rwanda has inspired many Nigerians,” Akpeyi stated in an interview with KickOff.
“Without intending any disrespect, I believe it will be challenging for Bafana Bafana to compete against Nigeria based on their display against Lesotho. I’m backing Nigeria to win.
“Rwanda’s approach of sitting back and relying on counterattacks made it tough for Nigeria to clinch a victory. If it weren’t for Rwanda’s goalkeeper, Fiacre Ntwari, those chances could have resulted in goals.
”But given the experience and age of the Nigerian players, I see Nigeria winning this match tomorrow.” “But knowing Bafana Bafana, they won’t sit back, which will allow Nigeria to exploit the gaps they leave behind.”
