‎”Not Just Sports, Reward Doctors, ASUU, Teachers Also”- Nigerians Cries Out

‎‎Nigeria’s lack of a clear reward system has become a big topic in public discussions. People are worried about fair pay for important jobs and services. The federal government has stirred up more debate after the Super Falcons won the 2024 WAFCON.

‎The top women’s football team in Africa won their 10th WAFCON title on July 26 with a thrilling 3-2 comeback against Morocco, the host country.

‎Although athletes should be celebrated, their success shouldn’t take attention away from important national issues like saving lives, giving education to children, and keeping the country safe.

‎On Monday, the federal government also praised D’Tigress, Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, after they won the 2025 Afrobasket with a score of 78-64 against Mali. This was their fifth straight title, making it a major achievement in Abidjan.

‎The reward for the Super Falcons, which was N1,500, or about $, meant each player got $100,000 (N150 million), and each member of the coaching team got $50,000 (N75 million).

‎In addition to that, each player got a three-bedroom apartment in the Federal Capital Territory, national honors, and a big celebration paid for by the public.

‎The Nigeria Governors’ Forum added another N350 million, making the total almost N5 billion for winning a tournament that only offered $1 million in prize money. Players and crew have also received more gifts from private companies and their state governments, and more may be coming.

‎While many Nigerians feel proud of the Super Falcons and D’Tigress, this show of generous spending by officials shows a bigger problem in the Nigerian government: a reward system that is not organized, fair, or planned for the long term.

‎Doctors, nurses, teachers, and police officers are the real heroes of Nigeria’s struggling systems. They aren’t asking for expensive things, just respect and fair treatment.

‎Their skills, hard work, and strength deserve to be recognized and rewarded by the nation.
