NBS Data Shows Nigeria’s Headline Inflation Eased to 22.97 Percent in May 2025

The National Bureau of Statistics, (NBS) says the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose to one hundred and twenty one point three five in May 2025, reflecting a one point eight three percent increase from the preceding month.

According to its May 2025 CPI report released, the Headline inflation rate eased to twenty two point nine seven percent relative to the April 2025 headline inflation rate which was twenty three point seven one percent. The report indicates that the May 2025 Headline inflation rate decreased by zero point seven four percent compared to the April 2025 Headline inflation rate.

On a year-on-year basis, the Headline inflation rate was ten point nine eight percent lower than the rate recorded in May 2024 which was thirty three point nine five percent. The figure indicates that the Headline inflation rate (year-on-year basis) decreased in May 2025 compared to the same month in the preceding year (i.e., May 2024), though with a different base year, November 2009 = 100.

Furthermore, on a month-on-month basis, the Headline inflation rate in May 2025 was one point five three percent, which was zero point three three percent lower than the rate recorded in April 2025 which was one point eight six percent.

This means that in May 2025, the rate of increase in the average price level is lower than the rate of increase in the average price level in April 2025. According to the NBS, the food inflation rate in May 2025 was twenty one point one four percent on a year-on-year basis.
