Arsenal’s Hale End Academy graduate Ovie Ejeheri has disclosed the emotional and personal motivations that led him to pledge his international future to Nigeria, even though he is eligible to play for both England and Uganda. Born in Greenwich, England, to a Nigerian father and a Ugandan mother, Ejeheri had the unique opportunity to select from three national teams.
However, the 22-year-old, who is currently playing for FC Midtjylland in Denmark, stated that his choice to represent the Super Eagles was a natural one, deeply rooted in his heritage and personal beliefs. “I consider myself someone who does not overthink decisions.
I simply know that whatever I wish to pursue, I will do it, honestly,” Ejeheri expressed in an interview with Flashscore.com. “I am aware of my heritage; I recognize my roots in those countries and understand the significance it would hold for my mother’s family or my father’s family if I were to play for Uganda or Nigeria.
However, the decision rests with me, and I am at peace with that. “Beginning his football journey at Arsenal at the age of eight, Ejeheri progressed through the ranks to the U18 team and secured a spot in England’s goalkeeper training camp.

Despite these early connections to English football, he remained steadfast in his desire to represent Nigeria. “Indeed, all three countries extended invitations to me.
England hosted a goalkeeper’s camp approximately five or six years ago. “It was an enjoyable camp, and I appreciated it. Uganda also reached out, as Nigeria did,” he reminisced. “Without a doubt, Nigeria is the team I have always aspired to play for.
“Ejeheri holds Nigerian goalkeeping icons Vincent Enyeama and Peter Rufai in high regard, stating that they have significantly influenced his career. “When considering goalkeepers I admire, I would certainly mention Enyeama, as he is the one I have personally observed.
However, my father frequently speaks of Peter Rufai, making him another figure I respect. “Although Stanley Nwabali currently occupies the No. 1 jersey for Nigeria, Ejeheri remains optimistic.
“I am thrilled. I understand that it is only a matter of time, without a doubt. I believe that as long as I demonstrate my capabilities at the club level, there is no reason I should not be given the opportunity.”
