The Rivers State Interprofessional Anti-Quackery Committee has sealed Standard Maternity Clinic in Borokiri following the tragic death of a patient, Mrs. Victoria Paris, after undergoing a Caesarean Section at the facility.
The Committee, led by the Director of Medical Services, Dr. Vincent Wachukwu, conducted an unscheduled investigative visit to the facility located at No. 2 Captain Amangala Street.
The visit was prompted by media reports surrounding the death of Mrs. Paris, who reportedly died as a result of complications arising from a surgical procedure carried out in the clinic.
The inspection revealed alarming irregularities at the facility, which operates from a three-bedroom apartment converted into a six-bed maternity ward. Key findings included:
The absence of licensed medical professionals, with operations handled solely by auxiliary nurses.
Unauthorized medical procedures beyond the scope of its registration, including surgeries carried out in substandard conditions.
Lack of a standard sterilization unit and failure to adhere to Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) protocols.

In response to these violations, Dr. Wachukwu announced the immediate revocation of the clinic’s registration and ordered its closure and sealing. All health personnel, including any affiliated doctors, have been summoned to appear before the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) panel.
Reacting to the incident, the Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Rivers State chapter, Dr. Diamond Tamunokuro, strongly condemned the unethical involvement of qualified doctors in substandard and unaccredited maternity homes.
He emphasized that such practices endanger lives and undermine the integrity of the medical profession.
This enforcement action forms part of the broader anti-quackery mandate spearheaded by the Rivers State Ministry of Health in collaboration with the NMA and other healthcare-related associations in the state.
