Rivers State Ministry of Health and its partners have reaffirmed their commitment to reducing maternal, neonatal and child health mortalities by providing more health care facilities across the state.
The Chief Medical Director, Rivers State Hospitals Management Board, Dr. Bright Ogbonda, made this known at a workshop in Port Harcourt. He said that the government was working to proffer solutions in reducing obstetric and newborn deaths in the state.
”There was an assessment of the infrastructure, equipment and readiness of each secondary health facility in Rivers State, to intervene in cases of obstetric and neonatal complications. So we have done that assessment and we have looked at various issues in each facility.
What we finally ended up doing is having a dissemination workshop, which aims to examine our assessment, turn it into a report, and propose solutions to some of these reports.

The Chief Medical Director, Rivers State Hospitals Management Board, expressed satisfaction that the initiative would cover some of the loopholes in the health care sector.

Also speaking on the implication of having functional secondary health care facilities in Rivers State, Dr. Jaiyeola Oyetunji emphasised collaborative effort from various stakeholders as key to achieving the desired goal of the program
”The recommendation is to encourage the government of Rivers State to continue to buy into this program because the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Governors Forum have reached an agreement. We need to put a stop to this, the death of mothers and babies across the country.
Some Partners are willing to bring in money to support the state, but that willingness, that political will, needs to be there.”
Highlights of the event were goodwill messages from stakeholders, training sessions for facility heads and the unveiling of the health assessment reports for obstetrics and newborns.
