The Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria) has confirmed an explosion and crude oil spill into water bodies in the Bonny Local Government Area of Rivers State on Wednesday, February 19, 2025.
In a statement issued on February 20, the Executive Director of YEAC-Nigeria, Dr. Fyneface Dumnamene Fyneface, acknowledged that the organization did not report the incident as soon as it occurred based on the information received at the ísketchy

“The organization initially delayed reporting the incident due to sketchy details, including uncertainty over the identity of the company responsible for the barge or vessel that allegedly exploded. Multiple oil companies operate in the area, complicating immediate identification.”
He called on the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) to assess the volume of crude oil spilled and ensure that the company responsible is held accountable.
“We urge NOSDRA to quantify the barrels of crude oil spilled and ensure the company responsible is held accountable.”
