NDDC Boosts Education in Niger Delta with AI-Focused Initiative

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing education in the oil-producing region, highlighting its critical role in unlocking potential and driving societal progress. The Commission underscored this during a sensitization rally at Stella Maris College, Port Harcourt, as part of World Education Day 2025 activities.

Dr. Awele Chukwudifu, NDDC’s Director of Education, engaged students on the importance of education in a rapidly evolving technological world. She explained how advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) are opening new opportunities and emphasized this year’s theme, “AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation.” Dr. Chukwudifu stressed the need for education to equip individuals and communities with skills to navigate and influence technology responsibly.

She highlighted that as AI systems grow more sophisticated, they often blur the line between human intention and machine action. This, she said, demands urgent conversations on safeguarding human agency and ensuring that technology enhances rather than replaces human decision-making in education.

At St. Mary’s Model School, Port Harcourt, where the NDDC also sensitized students, the headmistress, Reverend Sister Chimezie Amarachi, supported these insights. She urged stakeholders to ensure that humanity maintains control over AI applications. Amarachi insisted that AI must not overshadow essential human elements of learning, adding that education is the foundation of lasting peace in society.

Magnus Anyanugo, the principal of Stella Maris College, praised the NDDC for consistently supporting education in the region. He cited examples of the Commission’s contributions, including installing solar streetlights and sponsoring the New WW White Football Tournament finals hosted by the school. Anyanugo acknowledged AI’s transformative potential but warned against its risks, urging a balance between technology and human agency.

The NDDC’s campaign emphasized preparing students for a technology-driven future while reinforcing the importance of preserving human values in education. The discussions encouraged critical thinking on leveraging AI responsibly without compromising human involvement in key decision-making processes.

Through this initiative, the NDDC continues to empower the Niger Delta region, reinforcing education as a cornerstone for societal growth, innovation, and sustainable development.
