Nigerian Singer Speed Darlington Arraigned in Court, Granted Bail

Renowned Nigerian musician, Darlington Achakpo, better known by his stage name Speed Darlington, has recently been arraigned in court following a series of legal challenges. Reports confirm that the singer was also granted bail, a significant development in the ongoing saga surrounding his legal troubles.

One of Speed Darlington’s lawyers, Deji Adeyanju, made this announcement in a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday.

Adeyanju stated, “Police finally arraigns Speed Darlington in court. The bail application was moved and granted. We are trying to perfect the same.” The post has drawn significant public attention as fans and legal observers continue to follow the case.

This update comes just days after Speed Darlington’s legal team petitioned the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) in charge of the Force Intelligence Bureau, Dasuki Galadanchi.

The petition, filed last week, urged the DIG to comply with a court order regarding the singer’s continued detention. The order, issued by Justice M.S. Liman on December 23, 2024, directed the police to either formally charge Speed Darlington within 48 hours or release him unconditionally.

The arrest and legal proceedings stem from allegations of defamation and cyberstalking against fellow musician Burna Boy. Speed Darlington was initially taken into custody in October 2024 in Lagos before being transferred to Abuja, where he was detained at the Inspector General of Police’s Intelligence Response Team facility in the Guzape area.

Despite being released from custody after the first arrest, the singer faced re-arrest in November 2024 while performing at a show in Owerri, Imo State. This second arrest occurred just days after his return to Nigeria and further fueled public interest in the case.

In the aftermath of his arrests, Speed Darlington’s legal team, led by Rosemary E. Hamza from the Chambers of Deji Adeyanju & Partners, has been actively challenging the actions of law enforcement. Hamza emphasized the importance of adhering to the court’s directive, noting that the prolonged detention of her client without formal charges violated his rights.
