The Defence For Human Rights And Democracy (DHRD) has given reasons why the political crisis in Rivers State seems to have no end in sight.

The Chairman of DHRD, Comrade Clifford Christopher Solomon who said this in an interview with our correspondent also said the state is currently lacking the kind of elders that top political office holders can listen to.

According to him: “It is quite unfortunate that Rivers State is thrown into this endless quagmire. It has been one political tension or the other, fighting dirty all the time and there are no elders to say hey stop. No elder in the state that commands the respect to mediate in political matters.

“That is because we have lost our elder statesmen in the sense that our elder statesmen have lost their voices. We don’t have people who can look into the faces of top political officeholders today and tell them what is wrong.

“If not for the kind of Governor we have in the person of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, governance would have been stopped operating in the state and if not for his calm disposition, Rivers State would have been littered with dead bodies.

“Governor Fubara has tried his best to navigate through this crisis that has no end in sight. Everywhere is just very disorganized politically. Rivers State is the only state among the 36 states of the country that uses its entire four-year governance circle to play only politics till the tenure of the sitting administration elapses.

“Recently, the governor presented the 2025 budget to the Victor Jumbo-led House of Assembly leaving out other defected members led by Martin Amaewhule who are loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. This is because the current state House of Assembly is always in disarray because of the Jumbo and Amaewhule-led members.

“And it is affectng proper representation of the people like Degema LGA for instance that does not have a legislator that is favoured by the state executive. We all know that the way the system works is that everything revolves around the governor.

“I think the judiciary should speed up the matters so that we know the authentic members of the Rivers State House of Assembly. We do not want a situation where the governor and the FCT minister are both laying claims to two factions as the authentic House of Assembly. It now boils down to the judiciary to avert all of these dangers.

“Court judgment shouldn’t be given to favor who is more influential but should be given based on the merit of the case. Judgment should be given to put the political crisis in the state to rest so that Rivers people can enjoy the political peace that the state used to have in the past.”
