Police Nabs Alleged Suspects over Fake Kidnap for Sum of N50M from Parents in Delta

A 20-year-old boy named Nelson, who allegedly connived with his uncle, Jerry Lawrence, to stage a self-kidnapping with a demand of a staggering sum of N50 million from his father through Bitcoin, has both been apprehended by security operatives in Delta State.

Bright Edafe, the police spokesman, disclosed this in a video shared via his X handle on Thursday.

The 20-year-old boy uncle, Lawrence, said he invited his nephew to his house in Warri to gift him a PS4. When his nephew, Nelson, arrived, he confided in him his reason for the invitation, who claimed to be financially handicapped, and cajoled him into stagging a fake kidnapping to collect the sum of N50 million from Nelson’s father.

Although he said he sent his nephew to Calabar because he knew about how his nephew’s family has involved the police, he was able to know about the police involvement because he was part of their family WhatsApp group.

He further disclosed that he had lived with the Nelson family for over eleven years before he left their place.

Meanwhile, it was learned that 20-year-old Nelson was the only son of his father.

As the second suspect narrated, Nelson explained that out of the demanded money, his father ended up paying N5 million via Bitcoin. He further explained that his uncle has spent the sum of N2 million out of the N5 million sent to his wallet, which he has yet to remit to him.

The police spokesman stated, “So this is another dimension to crime; these suspects conspired and faked the kidnapping of one of them, who is 20 years old.”

“The young man agreed to be chained and beaten, and then the video was sent to the father, demanding a ransom of #50,000,000 in bitcoin. The father sent #5,000,000 in bitcoin before they were arrested. Please watch them narrate how they planned it.”

Edafe urged parents to instill the right values in their children to avoid being a threat to society in the future.

“Parents should train their children, if they don’t when they grow up, they might become a mess to you and society,” he advised.
