A newborn baby dumped at a waste bin to die in front of Mile 3 Park, Diobu Port Harcourt, was rescued in the early hours of Friday by the Diobu Vigilante group.

In an interview with our Correspondent, the Chief Security Officer of Nkpolu Oroworukwo, Mile 3 Diobu, under Diobu Vigilante Group, Godstime Ihunwo, said the baby was rescued during their routine patrol.

“At about 3 am this morning, Friday morning, 28 April 2023, while on routine patrol, I discovered a newborn baby less than 6 hours old as, at the point of discovery, the baby was still wrapped with clothes and placenta.

“I rescued the child and immediately called a female nurse for urgent medical attention to be given to the baby. Upon inspection by the nurse, the baby was discovered to be a female.

“I called Prince Wiro, a Human Rights Activist who immediately came to my office and accompanied me to Nkpolu Police station to make a formal complaint.

Comrade Ihunwo, however, appealed to the Rivers State Government to prevail on the contractors in charge of Ikwerre Road Street lights to ensure the lights are always on at night, adding it has been discovered that the street light is switched off some nights”.

In the meantime, Prince Wiro, Coordinator of the Centre for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign, has condemned the action of the unknown mother who left the newborn baby at the mercy of death.

Wiro described the action of the unknown mother as inhumane, callous and barbaric.

The Rights Activist advised young females who think they cannot care for a child after giving birth to seek help by approaching the relevant Government Ministry in charge of children’s welfare rather than throwing away the baby.
