RSU professor in court for sexually assaulting female student

One Professor David Ogbonna of the Rivers State University, Port Harcourt, has been arraigned in a Magistrate Court sitting in Port Harcourt over allegations of indecent sexual assault on a female student

The Professor is alleged to have unlawfully and indecently assaulted the victim who is twenty years old on the 16 May, 2022, inside the Rivers State University campus, Oruwokwo in Obio/Akpor Magisterial district, thereby committing an offence punishable under section 360 of the criminal code CAP 37 Vol.11 of laws of Rivers State, Nigeria 1999.

The Defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges when read out to him in court.

Counsel representing the Defendant, Higher King urged the court to grant the Defendant bail on self recognizance considering his status in the society.

Emi Jim-George argued that the court should not grant the Defendant bail in view of alleged threat to the life of the victim.

The presiding Magistrate, Chief Magistrate Menenen Poromon, after listening to argument of both Counsels granted the accused bail in the sum of two million naira, two passport photographs and a surety who must be residing in the Magisterial district.

The court adjourned to July 28, 2022.
