Boat union says security agents lack bravery in tackling piracy not gunboats

Transporters in the marine sector have come out to say that lack of bravery is the reason security agents could not tackle piracy and not lack of gunboats.

Security agents had consistently requested for gunboats which they say had impeded their efficiency in tackling piracy.

The Secretary, Speed Boat Transporters Association in Okrika, Jeremiah Omu told our correspondent that there are gunboats strategically stationed on waterways.

He said, “there are gunboats on our waterways which we see all the time.

“The challenge confronting security agents is not lack of gunboats but lack of bravery.

“Pirates use the creeks all the time and those are the areas security agents don’t like going to.

“Security agents only patrol at the open sea leaving the creeks for pirates to dominate.”

It could be recalled that the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike had recently donated 14 ballistic gunboats to security agents to enable them tackle piracy and other crimes on the state waterways.
