One dead in school shooting at Tennessee, U.S.A

A student has opened fire on officers responding to a report of a possible gunman at a Tennessee high school on Monday.

Police said they found the student in a bathroom at Austin-East Magnet High School in Knoxville, a city about 180 miles east of Nashville, Tennessee and ordered the student to come out, but he would not comply.

The suspect reportedly opened fire, which led to response fire from police officers that led to his death.

The student is said to have died at the school, while the officer who sustained an injury, was taken into surgery.

The Knoxville Police Department posted on Facebook that officers responded to reports of a male subject who was possibly armed at the school about 3:15 p.m.

“Upon approach of the subject, shots were fired”, they said.

“A Knoxville Police officer was struck at least one time and transported to the hospital with injuries that are not expected to be life threatening.

One male was pronounced dead at the scene.”

Bob Thomas, the superintendent of Knox County Schools, also confirmed that a shooting had occurred and the school building secured.
