Electricity consumers shut down PHED headquarters over lingering darkness

Electricity consumers in Port Harcourt on Monday shut down the headquarters of Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company, PHED, at Moscow Road over lack of power.

The consumers who came from every nook and cranny of the city picketed the Disco headquarters for supplying darkness despite distributing bills and collecting monthly payment.

They specifically lambasted for selling power to the highest bidders with its federal light system, a situation where estates or neighbourhoods are made to cough out up to 11 million to be given constant power.

According to them, the Disco has become notorious for delivering darkness despite the upward review of tariffs.

Enefa Georgewill, the chairman of Rivers State Civil Society Organisation said they decided to picket the Disco because it has not lived up to its mandate.

He said the organisation will soon mobilize to demand the ejection of PHED from Rivers State.

John Onyi, the spokesperson for the Disco did not immediately respond to enquiries for comments on the matter.
