NPFL: Rivers United moves to second place after beating Kano Pillars

Rivers United FC has moved to the second position of the Nigeria Professional Football League NPFL after beating Kano Pillars of Kano two one at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium, Port Harcourt.

Konan Ruffin and Cletus Emotan netted for the Pride of Rivers either side of half time while Rabiu Ali converted a brilliant free-kick with practically the last kick of the game to give the raucous visiting fans something to shout about.

The win takes United up to second on the NPFL standings with 36 points, just a point behind the leaders, Plateau United with the Jos club claiming a share of the spoils at the Aper Aku Stadium, Makurdi against third-placed Lobi Stars.

In a post-match interview, Technical Manager of Rivers United, Stanley Eguma confessed that the game was a tough one.

He, however, expressed happiness in the ability of his team to bag the three maximum points.

“The game was a tough one and Kano Pillars is a very good side, thank God we won the match. My boys played to instructions and we’re able to score two goals. It’s alright, we will continue to work hard to improve on our position on the table until the end of the league’. We were at the Continent before, so we are targeting to get back there God being on our side,” Eguma said.

On his part, the visiting team coach, Masu Gida said the game was lost to a better side.

He hailed his boy’s standard of play that earned them a goal.

Eleven corner kicks and 2 yellow cards were recorded in the encounter, with the host taking 7 and Pillars 4.

The 2 yellow cards were shared one apiece by both teams.

Rivers United will next travel to Okigwe to face Heartland FC in match-day 22 of the NPFL
