African Wrestling Championship: Team Nigeria to return today after dominance in Algeria

Team Nigeria will return to the country from Algeria on Tuesday 11 February 2020 after their feat at the just concluded African Wrestling Championships in Algiers.

Overall, Team Nigeria won a total of 14 medals – 7 gold, 5 silver, and 2 bronze, with all but one of the 15 wrestlers that represented the country at the competition returning home with a medal.

Their result in Algiers showed an improvement from 2019, where they won three medals; one gold and two bronze medals in Tunisia.

Team Nigeria won a record 9th consecutive title in Women’s Wrestling at the African Championships, claiming 6 gold and 4 silver medals with Commonwealth champions Odunayo Adekuoroye (57kg) and Blessing Oborududu (68kg) both rising to World No. 1 and 2 respectively in the global rankings.

In the men’s category, Nigerian freestyle wrestlers won four medals including a fourth consecutive continental gold for rising star Emmanuel Ogbonna John in the 74kg class as the competition came to an end on Sunday.

In the meantime, Emmanuel Ogbonna John has attributed his success to God and hard work.

He said his determination to succeed powered him to victory at the competition.
