Group asks Buhari to investigate electoral violence in Rivers, others

A Nigerian non-partisan and youth-focused organsation called Our Mumu Don Do Movement said the violence that occurred in some states during the Presidential and National Assembly elections should be investigated.

The statement was contained in a press release signed by the convener of the group, Charles E. Oputa on Friday.

The non-parrtisan group expressed concern about the deaths of Nigerians who died during the Presidential/NASS election on February 23 due to the violence that occurred in various places.

“We are very sad that the Nigerian State continues to kill innocent citizens even when they are carrying out their civic duties,” part of the statement read.

The Organisation said the violence that occurred in Okota, Lagos; Sabon Gari, Kano; Rivers and Bayelsa States should be thoroughly investigated. It added that those responsible must be duly punished.

The group also said it woukd lead a movement to audit all electoral violence during the last presidential election.

“We will lead a movement to ensure punishment for those responsible for the deaths of Nigerians.”

In the spirit to fight for justice, the activist movement also called on President Muhammadu Buhari, who had been re-elected for a second term, to release the “political prisoners” including the leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria Ibrahim El-Zakazaky and the former National Security Adviser Sambo Dasuki that the court courts have ordered to be released on bail.

“As President Buhari prepares to form a new government, we want to hope that he will start by obeying court orders and releasing political prisoners,” the statement read.

As the presidential election is over, the non-partisan group thereby called on Nigerian youths to press on towards freedom and prosperity. “We have to raise the banner of citizen-contact as the framework for a government that will receive our support,” the group charged the Nigerian youths.

The February 23 election recorded cases of violence and killings in some states which included Oyo, Rivers, Osun, Lagos, Bayelsa, Kogi and Anambra. For Instance, in Kogi State, an undergraduate student of Kogi State University identified as Daniel Usman was shot dead on the election day.
