Nigerian Army clamps down on kidnappers in Rivers State

The troops of 29 Battalion, 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt has clamped down on suspected armed robbers/kidnappers in Ukpelede community, Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The six division of the Nigerian Army in a statement signed by its Deputy Director Army Public Relations, Col Aminu Iliyasu said the operation is in continuation of its operation EGWU-EKE III.

Col Aminu Iliyasu stated that the sting operation was conducted following an intelligence report on the criminal activities of armed robbers and kidnappers in Ahoada West and along the ever busy East-West Road and its environs which has recently disrupted the free flow of activities in the general area.

He said the suspected kidnappers who on sighting the troops fired frantically and scampered for their lives were pursued by the gallant troops noting that one of the kidnappers was gunned down while others fled into the nearby bush.

Col Iliyasu said that the troops recovered some materials from the kidnappers.

He noted that some of the recovered items during the operation include; One Motorcycle, Twelve live Cartridges, One cult-like Axe, One Cutlass, Two Masks, and One Nokia phone. Four civilian victims were also rescued in the course of the operation.

He revealed that the body of the gunned down suspected kidnapper, 4 rescued civilians and the items recovered have since been handed over to the appropriate authority.

Col Aminu Iliyasu also said that the troops at the 29 Battalion Tactical Headquarters, Bille in Degema Local Government Area Rivers State in conjunction with other security agencies have destroyed Six illegal refineries in the area.

He stated that the team also impounded an empty barge suspected to be used in carrying illegally refined products around the area.
