Rivers APC chieftains to protest at INEC headquarters in Abuja

Indications emerged on Wednesday night that chieftains of the All Progressives Congress, in Rivers State are set to stage a protest in Abuja today to draw attention to the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to delist names of the party’s candidates for the 2019 gubernatorial, national and state assembly elections.

Recall that Justice JK Omotosho of the Federal High Court, on January 7, barred the Independent National Electoral Commission from recognising candidates of the APC for the elections.

INEC on January 17, delisted names of the party’s candidates from the ballot citing the ruling of the High Court.

However, an appeal filed by the party was heard on February 4 with the appeal court panel ordering a stay of execution of the High Court ruling. The Appellate Court did not specifically mandate the commission to re-enlist the names of the party’s candidates.

But a source knowledgable in the matter told theportcitynews that the party will protest at INEC headquarters to draw attention to the candidates’ plights.

He said the protest will also move to the Supreme Court complex as the Apex Court is set to hear another appeal concerning the party.

When contacted, spokesman for the Tonye Cole’s campaign organization, Ogbonna Nwuke, told our correspondent that they are weighing their option as regards their fate, saying that they are hopeful for a positive outcome.
