2019: NIS to bar foreigners from voting in Rivers state

The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) has assured Nigerians that no foreigner will be allowed to vote during the forthcoming general elections in the country.

Mr I.U. Panshekara, the comptroller, Rivers State Command of the Nigerian Immigration Service made this known at a town hall meeting organised by the National Orientation Agency (NOA), for a peaceful election in the state.

The town hall meeting had as its theme: “The Role of the Freedom of Information Act And Open Government Partnership in Ensuring a Peaceful Transparent And Credible 2019 General Elections”.

Panshekara was represented at the occasion by CSI Louis Amadi

He said that the command will work with relevant stakeholders to ensure that foreigners do not partake in the voting process, adding that the command will work the independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to ensure that the election is peaceful.

Participants at the forum also urged the media to ensure that citizens were educated on the need to be aware of their rights and responsibilities.

They also stressed the need for members of the society to activate the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act (FoI Act) with a view to accessing information on how they are being governed.

Similarly, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) says it has developed, validated and adopted a permanent dialogue mechanism to ensure a culture of openness in governance.
