Common Sense 33: Buhari, INEC and the 2019 elections

Baron Roy

A few days ago, Mr. Tinubu boasted that he should be buried alive if Mr. Buhari didn’t win the February 2019 elections. Mr. Buhari himself had recently declared that it’s impossible for him not to be declared as the winner come 2019.

The presidency declared a few days afterwards that “their retaining power is a done deal” or something along those lines.
However disturbing the prospect is, the return of the APC to the central is a very great likelihood.

Let’s interrogate the facts:

The SNC Think-Tank had been at the forefront of observing the Nigerian political firmament: Policies, Politics, Economy and Structure. The SNC gave a public notice that a precondition to participating in further elections or supporting any candidate shall be if the national assembly should remove INEC from the control of the presidency and the localization of elections. Of course, no one paid them any mind. Electioneering flagged off. And many SNC members and associate bodies simply turned their backs on the whole sham process.

By the 1999 Constitution, the control of INEC is the purview of the president. Never had I seen something as ridiculous as having the referee of a football game also as a football player for one of the teams. People are quick to point out that Mr. Jonathan lost elections through the ballot. Nothing could be more wrong; Mr. Jonathan NEVER lost the presidency through the ballot. The process was simply employed to validate the sham.

Given, the Jonathan Presidency was un-African in election matters; they were simply too decent for these climes. The APC has proved beyond reasonable doubts that they do not give a rat’s lap on the decency of elections or on the rights of the citizens. They control the security, judiciary and INEC, and they employ every pseudo-criminal way to ensure some stolen victories in the guise of security. They abandon the devastating insecurity in the North East and Middle Belt and deploy the military to “ensure” the sanctity of their “electoral victories”!

From Edo to Ekiti, Ondo, Kogi, Rivers, Osun and several more states, the APC-INEC Alliance sexed-up victories and employed both the security outfits and the courts to sustain those stolen mandates. As we speak, the APC controls 23 states, their INEC partners has 48 million PVCs in the North and 40 million in the South. This alliance has shown us all the very template required to announce the results in their favour come elections. And nothing would happen!

Oh yes, the national assembly passed an Electoral Law that the so-called president has refused to assent. Assent or not, INEC remains under the purview of the president. That Electoral Act us as good as administering paracetamol on a cancer patient. If we must overhaul the electoral system, we must start from the 1999 Constitution. Dear Readers, the return of APC to Aso Rock is almost a done deal.

The PDP?

When one makes a pact with the devil, one could be rest assured that there would be a price to pay. The PDP has made a pact with the Military-Caliphate Cabal and has refrained from campaigning on the side of the people. A cursory observation of their campaign shows that they do not want to antagonize the presidency, the caliphate or APC. Their campaign is almost a comedy when you look beneath the skin. The only thing they campaign on is the almost universal loathe for this current president or his surrogate. In fact, they have studiously avoided the Elephants in the Room (restructuring and Jubrin). That party has avoided any discussions about INEC or the electoral system. Yet, they go about giving people false hopes while working almost in tandem with those they claim they want to dislodge.

The PDP has not brought about any policy discussion for the fundamental overhaul of Nigeria. They’re not interested in controlling the national assembly or more states. All they want is the presidency. And nothing more. And neophytes would troop to the polls and endorse that nonsense.

Afenifere, Ohaneze, PANDEF, and the rest of those comedians are aware that neither the APC nor the PDP nor this electoral system nor constitution would bring any good tidings. Rather than seek ways to lead their different people to engage the Nigerian Establishment for a better day, they junk their leadership and join the bandwagon of electoral sham! They’re a whole lot of embarrassment!

We, the People too, that ought to wield the power, have refused to think or act in such a way to force a conversation that would lead to a fundamental change in the polity. We follow the nearest moneybags and holla “Chairmo” like some imbeciles. Then expect the chairmo of dubious qualifications and character to help develop the country or our enclaves. Talk of stupidity and you’d see a Nigerian!

My Dear People, girdle youth loins for 2019; historical analysis shows that we are stuck with this party and its president (whomever that could be). Our elites have made a pact with the devil, and have offered us we sacrifices! Forget the false narratives; we are in for a very long ride….

As long as this Constitution persists, there no hope in sight. It is wicked to give people false hope so when a whole bunch of nothing is being done. The ruling party is evil but they opposition is a whole bunch of unthinking folks…they’re the same anyway so nothing special. The refusal of the opposition to align with the aspirations of the people is unfortunate.

We must #restructureOrBurst. No getting around either of these options.
