The Pro-Chancellor of Niger Delta University, Bayelsa State Prof Steve Azaiki says the current strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities ASUU is justifiable.

The university Don equally said the timing is wrong.

Prof Steve Azaiki in a chat with our correspondent said the strike is detrimental to Nigerian students especially those in their final years.

“In the first place, ASUU’s decision to go on strike is good. But why the strike is justified, the timing and those affected by this strike are detrimental.

“These young children, they have no idea what ASUU is talking about, all that they know is to acquire education, leave school and become useful to themselves and the society” he said.

Prof Steve Azaiki also said education is on a free fall in Nigeria.

He stated that the Federal Government is not paying enough attention to educational development in Nigeria.

“On the federal government, we live in a country that does not even understand the importance of education. A country that continues to manage illiteracy. A country that continues to stay on a level below average.

“What is our budget for education? We live in a country that nothing is organized, we live in a country that education is in a free fall.

“We have so many universities that have no business being a university. We have people in the university that don’t know they are in the higher institution.

“The federal government must begin to understand that the cost of not having educated citizens is unquantifiable” he stated.
