Portuguese and Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has died after a car carrying him crashed in northern Spain just two weeks after he married his childhood sweetheart.

‎According to Spanish state-owned TV, citing local firefighters, the player was believed to have been travelling with his brother Andre, who is also a footballer, when the accident happened at around 12.40 am local time.

‎Jota, who married his partner Rute Cardoso in Porto two weeks ago, crashed in the province of Zamora while travelling towards Benavente when the car left the road and caught fire on the A-52, which is a key route taken by drivers leaving northern Portugal.
