Eight Electric Poles Destroyed in Major Tipper Accident on Iwofe Road in Port Harcourt

On Tuesday, a tipper truck accident caused significant damage to power infrastructure along Iwofe Road near Aker Junction in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The truck’s raised bucket snagged a low-tension power line, triggering a chain reaction that toppled eight electric poles supplying electricity to Aker Road and surrounding areas.

The tipper had just offloaded sand and was returning when the driver failed to lower the truck’s bucket to its default position. The raised bucket extended beyond the vehicle’s safe clearance height.

As the truck approached Aker Junction, the elevated bucket got entangled in low-tension power lines. The force of the moving truck yanked the cables, causing a domino effect that pulled down eight electric poles.

Fortunately, there was no active power supply when the accident occurred, preventing potential electrocution hazards or fire outbreaks. There were no pedestrians or vehicles struck by the falling poles, averting injuries or a fire outbreak.

The collapse of the poles disrupted the electricity supply to businesses and residents along Aker Road. Debris from the fallen poles temporarily obstructed movement along Iwofe Road.

The tipper driver was taken into custody at the Iwofe Police Station for questioning.

This incident highlights the need for stricter enforcement of tipper safety regulations and better power line management in high-traffic areas.

Drivers of articulated vehicles should be regularly reminded to check their equipment height before moving. The government or power distribution companies should inspect overhead cable heights to prevent future accidents.
