Medical Expert Calls for Protection of Minors from Sexual Abuse

Medical Expert

A medical expert in Rivers State, Dr. Ngozi Toby, has called on the government at all levels, including non-governmental groups in Nigeria. To ensure that minors are protected from sexual harassment, intimidation, and abuse. With much seriousness, to curb the excesses of perpetrators of these dastardly acts against God Almighty and humanity.

Also, ensuring that perpetrators are brought to book serves as a deterrent to those who might nurse such intentions. Speaking with the newsmen in Port Harcourt on the scourge of sexual molestation and abuse of minors in society, Dr. Toby advocated that the government should pay urgent attention to the issue.

She demanded that young people should be effectively protected from such an
irresponsible and wicked act committed by those who are supposed to be their fathers and grand-fathers.

However, the Dr. further suggested collaborative efforts between the Federal
Government, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), among others, stand up from their slumber and tackle the menace whenever it is being reported.

The medical expert maintained that when the issue is made known, governments at every level, and other agencies, such as churches, mosques, and health providers, among others, should provide counselling services and safe spaces for the victims.

Which, according to her, are essential in helping them to recover from the traumatic experiences and other support. Doctor Ngozi Toby, however, enjoined parents and guardians to teach their children and wards worthy of moral and a mode of dressing to avert attractions from perpetrators.

Doctor Toby used the opportunity to admonish all stakeholders to come
out to challenge sexual molestation and abuse against minors.

She pointed out that they would have traumatic experiences after the incident, and
deserved better treatment in various hospitals, immediately, cases of such magnitudes are reported.

“Parents and guardians, including children and wards, should learn how to properly dress. Remember that” The way and manner of your dressing will certainly determine how you are going to be addressed”.

She added that “girl-children who, due to peer groups and bad company, keep late nights, should stop keeping late nights for their own good”.

“Failure to come out of such mindsets may destroy their lives. Which, in turn, will
expose them to sexual harassment, abuse, intimidation, rape and, if possibly killed for ritual purposes,” Mrs Ngozi Toby submitted.
