As part of ongoing efforts to expand access to clean energy in underserved communities, the Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria) has embarked on a community assessment exercise in Rivers State to identify new locations for its Solar Mini-Grid Electricity Project.
Over the weekend, YEAC-Nigeria’s Executive Director, Dr. Fyneface Dumnamene Fyneface, accompanied by team member Bere Letam Noble, visited Utuechi, Obiafu, and Utu Umuoriji communities in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area.
The visit aimed to evaluate the suitability of these communities for the next phase of the organisation’s solar electrification initiative targeting Communities Without Electricity (CWE) in the Niger Delta.

The Solar Mini-Grid Project is one of YEAC-Nigeria’s strategies to address critical issues in the region, including pipeline vandalism, crude oil theft, artisanal refining, and environmental degradation. By providing alternative energy sources and employment opportunities for young people, the initiative contributes to regional stability and environmental protection.

The assessment follows a recent public call by YEAC-Nigeria for expressions of interest from communities seeking to benefit from the facility. This is in addition to communities previously identified by the organisation.

Following the assessment in Rivers State, the YEAC-Nigeria team travelled to Delta State for an inspection of the solar mini-grid facility commissioned in Umuolu, Ndokwa East Local Government Area, on August 12, 2024. During the visit, the team interacted with project workers, community leaders, and residents to monitor performance and gather feedback.
Dr. Fyneface, who also serves as the Solar Mini-Grid Manager, engaged directly with users of the facility, many of whom expressed gratitude for the intervention. He also addressed minor technical concerns, some of which were resolved immediately.
YEAC-Nigeria expressed appreciation for the support and cooperation of both current and potential beneficiary communities and reaffirmed its commitment to expanding clean energy access, curbing oil-related crimes, and protecting the environment across the Niger Delta.
