Fatal Crash in Port Harcourt Kills Six, Driver Flees

A high-speed car crash in the Eliozu area of Port Harcourt killed six pedestrians late Monday night, according to a social media post and local accounts, though police have yet to confirm the incident. The accident occurred near Unity Filling Station, a gas station on an unnamed road in Rumodome, when a grey Toyota sedan veered out of control, knocked down electric poles, and struck a walkway, the post on X by @PH_Socials reported Tuesday morning.

Images shared in the post showed a heavily damaged vehicle with a shattered windshield, debris scattered around the scene, and a crowd of onlookers. The car’s license plate, visible in the images, read “ABJ-10EM,” indicating it may be registered in Abuja.

The driver and occupants of the car survived the crash but fled the scene, the post claimed, citing no specific source. The account speculated that the driver and passengers were “young boys suspected to be Yahoo boys and under drugs,” However, no evidence was provided to support this claim, and authorities have not identified the driver.

The bodies of the victims were evacuated by 4 a.m. Tuesday, the post said. The exact number of casualties remains unconfirmed, with @PH_Socials reporting “about six” deaths. The Rivers State Police Command did not immediately respond to requests for comment, and no official statement has been released as of 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Local residents expressed outrage on social media, with some calling for the driver to turn themselves in. “The owners of this car or driver should kindly go and turn themselves in to Mini Okoro Police Station or SARS Road PHED office,” wrote X user @eebuchi, who claimed to be an eyewitness. Another user, @EngrAgbue007, suggested that authorities could trace the driver using the car’s license plate and registration documents.

The Eliozu area has seen similar incidents in recent years. In 2022, a trailer accident under the nearby Rumuokoro Flyover caused significant damage, according to local media reports. Additionally, a 2022 attack at the same flyover left four policemen dead, with the perpetrators fleeing the scene.

Authorities have not confirmed whether an investigation is underway or if the driver has been identified. Residents are urged to provide any information about the incident to the Rumuokoro Police Station.
