Expert Urges Government to Leverage Technology in Security

A security expert, Mr. Charles Inko-tariah has called for the use of technology and participation by citizens to curb ongoing security challenges in the country. Mr Inko-Tariah, who made the call during our live Interactive program, Democratic Platform, lamented that the current security system in Nigeria is largely analog and needs to leverage non-kinetic methods and technology to boost security.

According to him, the use of technology in securing lives and property is not only effective but also cheaper. He said “The government needs to engage experts, they need to hear from people, to get genuine recommendation in this direction and yes I support state participation in security and not state police.

In this case, it’s recruiting more people, for instance, Rivers State is about 7 million people how many state police will you recruit, let’s say we recruit hundred thousand persons which are not possible, even the entire country over how many years have been trying to recruit ten thousand, if the state recruits fifty thousand, how many people can you cover it’s impossible”.

The security expert expressed reservations about the idea of state police, arguing that it could be politicized but he instead advocates for state participation in security architecture.“Technology is the way to go; if we are operating on this technology, we don’t need a community crowd. AI will see and know hamper lines when bandits are approaching the time and everything, and they will be monitored.

Drones have demobilization facilities that can demobilize people like that. There is nothing you can compare to technology in security. It will even be safer for the police and army and reduce human interference,” he added. Mr. Charles stressed that security is a collective responsibility and everyone’s involvement is crucial in securing lives and property in the state.
