Resignations Won’t Halt RSIEC Operations – Ex-Rivers Commissioners

Amidst the political tussle in Rivers State, former commissioners of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), Dr. Hope Barango-Tariah and Professor Ken Nweke, have stated that the commission will continue functioning despite the resignation of some members.

The Gist publication, in a post shared on X on Sunday, acknowledged that in separate interviews with Rhythm News, the two ex-commissioners commented on the situation.

It was recalled that TCPN reported on March 7 that the pro-Wike lawmakers had summoned the RSIEC chairman, retired Justice Adolphus Enebeli, along with other commissioners, for questioning. They warned that failure to appear before the lawmakers on March 10 would invoke Section 129 of the Constitution.

Furthermore, Gist also stated that the commission can only be incapacitated if the chairman resigns.

It was gathered that the ex-commissioners asserted that despite the ongoing political drama, the commission remains capable of functioning as an electoral body.

However, these statements follow the alleged resignation of RSIEC members, raising questions about its ability to function.
