Tems Becomes First African Woman in MLS Ownership

Grammy-winning Nigerian artist Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has made history by becoming the first African woman to be part of a Major League Soccer (MLS) ownership group.

She recently joined San Diego FC (SDFC) as a club partner through her company, The Leading Vibe.The announcement was made by SDFC, highlighting Tems’ involvement in the club’s ambitious project.

SDFC chairman Sir Mohamed Mansour expressed excitement over her addition, emphasizing her global influence and the club’s deep-rooted connection to sub-Saharan Africa through the Right to Dream initiative. “We are delighted that Tems has joined San Diego FC as a club partner,” Mansour stated.

“Tems is a globally significant artist who will help us reach new audiences and spread the word about our unique project, which, of course, has its foundations in sub-Saharan Africa through the unique Right to Dream organisation.”

Tems, in her reaction to the partnership, expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity to contribute to the club’s vision. She highlighted the role of football in uniting people and celebrated the club’s commitment to creativity, culture, and community.

“I am thrilled to join San Diego FC’s ownership group and to be part of a club that celebrates creativity, culture, and the power of community,” she said. “Football has a unique way of bringing people together, and I am excited to help build something special in San Diego, a city that thrives on diversity and innovation.”
