Rivers State Launches Emergency Livestock Vaccination to Curb Anthrax Spread

In a proactive move to prevent the spread of anthrax following recent outbreaks in Zamfara and Niger states, the Rivers State Government has announced a statewide livestock vaccination campaign. The exercise, scheduled to run from February 10 to 17, aims to protect livestock and ensure food safety across the state.

Commissioner for Agriculture, Victor Kii, emphasized that the initiative aligns with Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s policy on food security and safety. He highlighted the urgency of the situation, stating that the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security recently confirmed anthrax outbreaks in parts of the country, necessitating immediate preventive measures.

“The twin goals of food safety and security are a shared responsibility,” Kii stated. “We urge all livestock farmers to collaborate with our veterinary doctors to make this campaign a success.”

Anthrax is a highly infectious zoonotic disease that affects both animals and humans. It can spread through direct contact with infected livestock, consumption of contaminated meat or animal products, or inhalation of spores. The symptoms in animals include high fever, weakness, difficulty in breathing, and bleeding from body openings.

To mitigate risks, Kii announced that anthrax vaccines would be made available in all 23 local government areas of the state. He called on livestock farmers to ensure their animals are vaccinated and advised the general public to be cautious when purchasing livestock.

“The public, especially those engaged in livestock rearing and sales, must take advantage of this vaccination program. It is crucial to observe animals for signs of illness before slaughter, avoid contact with meat or by-products from sick or dead animals, and report any sudden deaths to the Ministry of Agriculture and the veterinary department,” he added.

Kii further reassured residents that the ministry is working closely with relevant stakeholders to prevent anthrax from spreading into Rivers State. He urged anyone who suspects a case of anthrax to report it immediately to the appropriate authorities.

With this decisive action, the Rivers State Government hopes to safeguard public health, prevent economic losses in the livestock sector, and reinforce its commitment to food security in the state.
