Davido Reveals How He Built His Music Empire

Afrobeats sensation Davido has shed light on why his billionaire father, Chief Adedeji Adeleke, intervened in his first professional recording contract.

The singer revealed that in 2011, he had signed a deal with Black Diamond Promotions. However, his father later bought him out of the agreement after watching a snippet of the video for his breakout hit, Dami Duro.

Davido explained that his father’s decision was motivated by a desire for him to retain ownership of his music masters. This revelation came after Tosin Ashafa, the singer’s former record label boss, recounted how Davido’s father handled the situation.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Ashafa shared: “I signed @davido to his 1st official contract under Black Diamond Promotions with Cecil Hammond/another silent partner. We hired @GodwinTom to manage him. Dr. Adeleke realized David was really serious with pushing his music without him, reached out to us, and bought us out.”

Responding to the post, Davido expressed his gratitude: “So much respect to you guys for allowing me walk!! Just know u were part of something that turned out to be phenomenal!!”

When an X user mistakenly claimed the incident occurred in 2019, Davido clarified: “No, I signed the contract in 2011 … it was a good contract, not bad! But Daddy wanted me to have 100 percent of whatever I was doing! Especially after I played him the first cut of Dami Duro’s video in his office! He knew it was game time!!!”
