ICMC, NBA ask members to avoid court premises as LG tenureship crisis looms

By Mark Lenu

The Institute of Chartered Mediators and Counciliators as well as the Nigerian Bar Association have asked their members to avoid the court premises in Rivers State. The duo groups released the advice because of the looming tension across the 23 LGAs of the state.

The tension was said to have emanated from the refusal of the local government chairmen to vacate office after their tenures got expired on Monday, June 17, 2024. The advice was contained in two separate short statements issued and signed by the Port Harcourt branch chairman and secretary of both groups and read as follows:

Good morning Dear Colleagues.

Due to the security situation, the security apparatus has advised as a precautionary measure that all judicial officers stay away from the court premises till advised otherwise. In the circumstances, our program cannot hold today and stands postponed. Please uphold our state in prayers, that all security issues be resolved peacefully and without further ado. A new date for our event will be communicated as soon as possible.

Abayomi Akinwole
Chairman, ICMC PH

Dear Colleagues,
Kindly exercise reasonable discretion when approaching courts today, as the environment is fraught with uncertainty.

Yours in Service,
Chinwe Omodu, Esq.
Secretary, NBA PH
