Guber Election: Igbo Community in Rivers back Magnus Abe

Kelechi Esogwa-Amadi

It is now clear that members of the Igbo Community in Rivers State have decided to queue behind Senator Magnus Ngei Abe in the forthcoming governorship election of March 11, 2023.

Abe is the governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Rivers State.

The Igbo Community leaders, during a visit to the Gokana-born governorship candidate on Monday, declared their support for him based on their belief in his ability to give Igbos in the state a fair deal if he wins the governorship.

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the group, Chinwendu Onwuma, while speaking at the event, said the Igbos as mainly traders and businessmen, desire an enabling environment to do their business.

He called on Igbos to come out in large numbers to vote for Sen. Magnus Abe on March 11 since he has promised to protect them and their business if he becomes governor of the state.

Onwuma said: “We must come out to vote for a man who has promised to defend Ndi Igbo, protect Ndi Igbo, make sure that our businesses have the enabling environment and we can trade, because Ndi Igbo, we’re business people and let us use that opportunity well that at the end of the day, we will not have reason to regret.”

The Igbo Community spokesman noted that the SDP governorship candidate, Sen. Magnus Abe, has an eighty percent chance of winning the governorship election given his popularity and the wide acceptance he is receiving from the Rivers public, especially the market men and women.

He said: “Distinguished Senator Magnus Abe has at least an eighty percent chance of winning this election. If you’re in the market you will know.”

The Igbo Community PRO, Chinwendu Onwuma had, a few days ago, debunked social media reports that the group had a meeting with Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, in the government house Port Harcourt.

Dismissing the report as false, he explained that his group was not invited to attend any such meeting, adding that Igbos in PDP may have been the ones that had a meeting with the governor.

The Igbo Community’s support for Sen. Magnus Abe comes in the heels of similar support declared for the SDP governorship candidate by members of the non-indigenes group in the state led by Mr. Uchenna Okokoba, who recently revealed that he is now receiving threatening calls from strange elements.
