Wike signs resolution delisting Celestine Omehia as former Governor, bans use of schools for political rallies

Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike has signed the motion passed by the State House of Assembly to delist Celestine Omehia as former Governor of the state.

The State Assembly on Thursday, in a motion by the Leader of the House, Martin Amaewmule and seconded by Evans Bipi, Whip of the House sought to derecognise Omehia as a former Governor.

The motion held that Omehia refunds all monitory entitlements received from the Rivers State Government, especially the sum of 600 million naira in benefits and 96.5 million naira in pension he has so far received as at September 2022 from the Rivers State Government within seven days.

The governor, who assented to the motion on Friday, also signed an Executive Order 21 prohibiting political parties and others from using public schools for political rallies without the approval of the state ministry of education.

Wike said the application for approval must be submitted at least two weeks before the date of any proposed campaign.

He also directed that applicants will deposit the sum of five million caution fees to check mate participants who may destroy facilities in the schools during the rallies.

The governor also stressed that local council chairmen have the right to stop any rally holding without an approval, adding that the state government will not allow political parties and their supporters to disturb the peace in the state with political campaigns.

He also noted that heads of schools that connive with political parties to hold rallies without approval by the state government will be penalized.

Wike also advised candidates for the upcoming elections to be committed, peaceful, and responsible in their conduct as required by law while reiterating his stance against the use of hotels and other leisure spots as meeting points ahead of the elections.
