A Police officer has been shot dead when heavily armed gunmen attacked the Deputy Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress APC, in Rivers State, Dr Innocent Barikor.
The incident occurred at the GRA axis of Port Harcourt on Tuesday.
The gunmen opened fire on the deputy governorship candidate as he was coming out of a building after a meeting but the deceased officer was in front of Barikor when the assailants opened fire on them.
The officer who was shot multiple times later died in the hospital while the Deputy Governorship candidate escaped unhurt.
When contacted, the public relations officer of the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Koko who confirmed the incident, said the Police officer was targeted by the gunmen because of the rifle he was holding.
The police spokeswoman, however, dismissed assassination attempts on Dr Barikor.
