As the nation marks its Democracy Day, the Civil Society Organization in Rivers State has scored the country’s politicians zero on accountability and rule of law.
President Muhammadu Buhari had in 2018 directed that the nation’s Democracy Day be henceforth held on June 12 of every year to replace the May 29 Democracy Day.
Buhari further honoured the winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election, Chief Moshood Abiola, with the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR).
The federal government through its ministry of interior had also declared Monday June 13 as public holiday.
In a chat with our correspondent, the state chairman of the CSO, Georgewill Ene-faa said the country is practicing civilian regime not democracy.
He said the tenets of democracy are not felt in governance, accusing the political class of not dispensing the dividends of democracy to the people.
“We, the Civil Society Organisation in Rivers State have scored the political class zero on rule of law and accountability.
“Democracy is not all about building bridges and physical infrastructures as military regimes also build physical infrastructures as well.
“That government of the people, by the people and for the people which is the definition of what democracy stands for is not practiced in Nigeria,” he said.
The state CSO also urged the masses to rise up and demand accountability from the political class at all times.
