UK sanctions Abramovich, blocks sale of Chelsea FC

Roman Abramovich was hit by sanctions from the UK government, plunging Chelsea Football Club’s long-term future into doubt.

The Russian Oligarch has had his assets frozen and will be unable to sell the West London club having announced his plans to do so earlier this month.

His sale of the club will now be stalled, but could still go through provided the Government issues with a licence.

The club are also facing serious restrictions after a special sporting licence was put in place to allow them to keep operating.

Chelsea have been stopped from selling tickets and their club shop has been closed whilst there will be serious implications for Thomas Tuchel’s side with no contract renewals or transfers possible.

Chelsea will be subject to a transfer ban and be blocked from negotiating new contracts with current players after all of Abramovich’s UK assets were frozen.

Chelsea matches can still be broadcast, while only existing club merchandise can be sold. Chelsea’s shirt sponsor, telecommunications company Three, has placed their £40m-a-year deal under review.
