Port Harcourt: Offices shut, fewer vehicles on roads over COVID-19 scare

Port Harcourt

There were fewer vehicles on the roads in Port Harcourt on Thursday as people stayed indoors following the news of a new case of Coronavirus in Rivers State.

Nigeria recorded five new cases on Wednesday, bringing the number of confirmed cases to 51.

The Nigerian Center for Disease and Control, NCDC, announced that Lagos now has 32 cases of coronavirus, making it the state with the highest number of cases in the country.

The Federal Capital Territory, FCT, has now recorded 10 cases, with one of them linked to the Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari, who tested positive a few days ago and is currently receiving treatment.

Ogun State has recorded three cases, while Ekiti, Oyo, Edo, Bauchi, Osun and Rivers each have an index case.

Governor Nyesom Wike had on Monday announced sweeping measures geared towards preventing the spread to the state.

The measures announced by Wike includes a ban on clubs, bars, parks, weddings, burials and religious activities.

Also, on Wednesday, the governor announced the closure of all entry points into the state.

However, residents were seen going about their normal business until when a case was confirmed on Wednesday night.

Our correspondent observed that several shops were seen shut while few vehicles were on the roads.

Offices also closed down while taxi drivers refused to comply with the social distancing announced by the governor.
