Commissioner orders contractors back to sites in Rivers

The Rivers State Commissioner for Education, Professor Kaniye Ebeku has directed all contractors in charge of Construction work at the Government Secondary school, Okarki, Ahoada West local government area to immediately return to site.

Professor Ebeku gave the directive shortly after inspecting the level of construction work done at the school site.

Accompanied by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry of education, Sir. Chidi Adiele, Director Quality Assurance, Mrs. Mae Solomon, Director Finance and accounts, Edwin Amadi, the Education Commissioner frowned at the abandonment of the construction work.

Professor Ebeku condemned the attitude of abandoning government projects after receiving total value sum of contract by contractors and assured that the state Government will tolerate laxity by contractors

He said “We thought that we should come and find out how the contractors have gone and we have found out that all the contractors have abandoned the site”

The Education Commissioner stated that the Rivers state government through the Ministry of Education had paid contractors 100 percent of the contractual fee and only one of the contractors has shown seriousness with his job, noting that other contractors had no reason abandoning their projects.

The Commissioner during the visit also frowned at staff laxity to work and cautioned staff of the school against truancy, noting that the Ministry under his watch will not tolerate absenteeism from Staff

Professor Ebeku said, “however I have observed students in classes but no teacher. We are providing these structures for both staff and teachers and we will not tolerate a situation where students are in class but no teachers to teach them”.

The Commissioner shortly after inspecting the level of work done at the Government Secondary school, Okarki also visited Western Ahoada County High School, Ahoada and Community Secondary School Ula-Upata in Ahoada East Local Government area.
