Flooding in PH: Ihunwo indicts ministry of urban development

The Chairman of Port Harcourt City Local Government Area, Victor Ihunwo, has accused the Rivers State Ministry of Urban Development and Physical Planning for being part of the cause of flooding witnessed in parts of Port Harcourt.

Ihunwo indicted the ministry when he appeared before the House of Assembly committee on environment to answer questions on his level of preparation over the forecast by NIMET which listed 18 Local Government areas as flood-prone areas.

He accused the ministry of giving out indiscriminate building approvals particularly in Eagle Island and the Elekahia link road.

According to him, most of the approvals are giving for people to build on drains which are mostly responsible for the flooding around the area.

He added that that the council has acquired a 2-story building opposite the mile 3 park to resettle about 2000 flood victims.

On his part chairman of the environment committee, Hon Dumle Maol said the meeting was targeted on how to address the current flooding in the state.
