Diri beats Alaibe to emerge as Bayelsa PDP guber candidate

Sen. Douye Diri has won other aspirants to emerge as the gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the November 16 Bayelsa governorship election.

Diri who has backing from the incumbent governor, Seriake Dickson polled a total of 561 votes to defeat his closest rival Timi Alaibe.

Alaibe polled 365 votes in the primary election held on Tuesday at Gabriel Okara Cultural Centre, Yenagoa.

Gov. Darius Ishaku of Taraba who was the chairman of the Party’s Electoral Committee for the state while declaring the result, said Mr Keniebi Okoko came third with 142 votes.

Twenty-one aspirants contested to be the party flag bearer.

The 60-years-old Diri was a member of the House of Representatives from 2015 to 2019 representing Yenagoa/Kolokuma/Opokuma federal constituency of the state.

The former teacher and businessman was later elected as the Senator representing Bayelsa central senatorial district during the 2019 general election.
