School building collapses in Port Harcourt (Pictures)

A secondary school building has collapsed in the Rumubiakani area of Port Harcourt.

The 2-storey structure belonging to Immanuel Comprehensive College collapsed in the early hours of Wednesday.

It is unclear if anyone was hurt or trapped under the rubble but people living in the area said they ran out when debris began falling on their roofs.

Emmanuel Ine, a resident of the area told theportcitynews that the building collapsed around 2 am on Wednesday morning.

“It was when the debris started falling on our roofs that we began evacuating to safety. I woke up everyone and we ran out” he said.

An official of the Rivers State ministry of urban and physical development told theportcitynews that the ministry is investigating the collapse.

Officials of the school refused to comment when contacted by theportcitynews but residents said they saw the building tilting towards a side and after 45 minutes, it collapsed.

They said the building was old but could not give the exact year it was built.

An inquiry into the documents of the building from the ministry of urban development was not immediately complied with.

An eyewitness simply identified as Peter told our correspondent that the collapse sounded like an earthquake.

He said that vibration from the building woke them up.

He said that the Wednesday collapse was not the first time the school building was collapsing as another 4-storey structure belonging to the school collapsed in 2016.
