Rumuola indigenes barricade PHED office over lack of electricity

Indigenes of Rumuola in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State on Tuesday picketed the Rumuola office of the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company over the inability of the power company to provide them with electricity.

The women set up shop with a canopy and tripod made of stones and cooked in front of the PHED office.

Those who spoke to Theportcitynews expressed sadness over the inability of the power company that they are hosting in their community to provide them electricity.

They said that their soups sour all the time as they could not preserve them anymore, adding that in the past three months, they have not seen a flash of electricity.

This comes weeks after the minister of power, housing and works, Babatunde Raji Fashola, claimed that over 20 states in the country enjoy 24 hours electricity.

They said that until the community is provided with electricity, they will not leave the office.

Another resident who spoke our correspondent, Emmanuel Woko, said that the PHED office at Rumuola has not given them light in over 3 months.

He said that none of the indigenes of the community which has hosted the power company for over 30 years works in the company, stressing that the BM allegedly asked for a bribe of 2 million before electricity could be provided to the community.

He called on the power company to urgently provide light to the community to enable the community live as decent human beings.
