CLO calls for the sack of INEC chairman over election postponement

Ugochukwu Iwuchukwu

A Civil liberty organization CLO in Rivers State has called for the sack of the Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, over the postponement of the Presidential and National Assembly Elections.

INEC had on Saturday, Feb 16th postponed the presidential and National Assembly elections to the 23rd of Feb while the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly will now hold on March 9th, 2019.

INEC said the reason behind the postponement was due to some logistics challenges.

However, the postponement of the elections is not going down well with some electorates and the Civil Liberty Organization CLO in Rivers State.

The State Chairman of CLO Sotonye George who made the call in a chat with our correspondent said the sincerity of purpose is in doubt.

“From the Civil Society angle we look at it as a very big disaster, less than six hours to the election, a broadcast was made that the election has been postponed. It is a national disappointment and we are saying that the INEC chairman should be sacked”.

Sotonye George, however, called on Rivers people to continue to maintain peace and ensure they prepare fully for Saturday elections in the state.

“We also plead with Nigerians to be patient and prepare for the elections on Saturday 23rd Feb. We are calling on Rivers people not to be discouraged by the postponement but be more determined to exercise their franchise come this Saturday at the different polling units”
